The European Commission (EC) has granted Promoted Geographical Indication (PGI) status to a special tea grown in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The effective date of this PGI will be from April 11, 2023, as stated in the notification issued by the EC on March 22. The move comes at a time when the EC is delaying granting a similar status to basmati rice, for which India had applied in 2018.
