A cargo ship was flagged off from Kolkata port on Thursday on a trial run at Sittwe in Myanmar, which is funded by India as part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project, officials said. Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur flagged off the ship. The objective of the project is to provide alternative connectivity to the North East region from Kolkata port via Sittwe port to Paletwa in Myanmar by waterways and from Paletwa to Zorinpui in Mizoram by road.
