Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced on 21 December 2022 that the 26th National Youth Festival 2023 will be organized in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad. The Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Youth Festival on January 12, 2023. The National Youth Festival is organized by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with one of the state governments. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced on 16 December 2022 that Morocco will host the Football Club World Cup next year. The tournament will take place from 1-11 February 2023. The tunneling work of 12.89 km length of the 111 km long under-construction Banihal-Katra rail line in Jammu and Kashmir has been completed. This is India’s biggest ‘escape’ tunnel. An escape tunnel has been built along with the main tunnel (12.75 km long). Provision of escape tunnel has been made to facilitate rescue and restoration operations in case of emergency. It is part of the prestigious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL) project. It is the fourth tunnel after the 12.75 kilometer long tunnel T-49 (longest tunnel of Indian Railways) on Banihal-Katra route. The ‘T-49’ tunnel was completed in January this year.

The Government of India has appointed senior diplomat Suhail Ejaz Khan as the new Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia. Suhail Ejaz Khan is a 1997 batch Indian Foreign Service officer and is currently serving as the Indian Ambassador to Lebanon. Khan worked at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh as Deputy Chief of Mission between September 2017 and June 2019. Retired IAS officer and Tamil writer M Rajendran has been selected for the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2022 for his novel Kala Pani, which narrates the war between the Marudhu brothers and the East India Company in 1801 in the forests of Kalayarkoil. It is said to be the first protest against the British as it took place 56 years before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The award carries Rs 1 lakh, a copper plaque and a citation and will be conferred at a later date. Rajendran hails from Vadakarai in Madurai and worked as an advocate in the Madurai district court for three years before joining the civil service.

The central government has appointed former Supreme Court judge Hemant Gupta as the chairman of the New Delhi International Arbitration Center (NDIAC). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved the appointment of Justice Gupta in a notification issued on December 19. He retired on October 16 after a four-year term in the Supreme Court. During his tenure as a Supreme Court judge, Justice Hemant Gupta delivered several landmark judgements, including the judgment in the Karnataka hijab ban case.
