The central government appointed 1991 batch Indian Police Service officer Alok Sharma of Uttar Pradesh cadre as the director of the Special Protection Group (SPG). The appointment of Alok Sharma as the new SPG chief was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Alok Sharma, who is currently serving as Additional Director General in SPG, has been given the new charge of Director, SPG from the date of joining till further instructions.

Tamil writer Perumal Murugan won the JCB Prize for Literature of the Year, 2023 for his novel ‘Fire Bird’. ‘Fire Bird’ was translated from Tamil to English by Janani Kannan. This book was originally published as Alanda Patchi. This book was published by Penguin Random House India. Due to the absence of Murugan and Kannan at the awards ceremony, publisher and writer Manasi Subramaniam received the award on their behalf.

Former RBI Governor S Venkatraman passed away due to illness at the age of 92. Before becoming the RBI Governor, Venkataramanan also served as Finance Secretary and advisor to the Government of Karnataka. He was a member of the Indian Administrative Service. Venkataramanan held the post of Governor of RBI between December 1990 and December 1992. Current RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das praised him as an ‘outstanding personality’ and ‘public servant’ and recalled his immense contribution during the period of crisis.
